Qualifying life event

A change in circumstances, such as marriage or loss of coverage, that triggers eligibility for a Special Enrollment Period.

Updated

A qualifying life event is a change in personal circumstances that makes an individual eligible for a Special Enrollment Period outside the annual Open Enrollment Period. Common qualifying events include marriage, birth or adoption, loss of minimum essential coverage, a permanent move to a new coverage area, and changes in income that affect subsidy eligibility.

Each event type has its own documentation requirements and timeframe for enrolling.

In practice

Eligibility staff document the qualifying life event and its date to determine SEP eligibility and the coverage effective date. Documentation, such as a marriage certificate or prior coverage termination notice, is typically required to substantiate the event before the Marketplace or plan activates coverage.
