Rendering provider
The individual provider identified as performing or rendering the billed service when required on the claim.
Updated
The rendering provider is the individual identified as having performed or rendered the service represented on the claim when that information is required. The rendering role must match the encounter, service, billing arrangement, enrollment, and payer requirements.
The rendering provider can differ from the organization or individual billing provider that submits the claim and requests payment.
In practice
Use the documented service performer and effective-dated provider master data. Do not default to an enrolled provider who did not render the service.
Commonly confused with
- Billing provider: The billing provider submits and requests payment; the rendering provider identifies who performed the service.
- Referring provider: The referring provider directs the patient or service; the rendering provider performs it.
